Today I set the alarm for 6:30 and we were out the door by 7:20. Filled up the gas tank and had a leisurely drive to Milford Sound. We stopped at the aptly named Mirror Lakes.
We encountered a bit of fog but it soon gave way to sun as we climbed up to the alpine.
Through the 1.2 kilometer Homer Tunnel, which was hand dug during the depression as a make-work project.
Now I know we're in New Zealand!
We had to make a decision - pay $10 an hour for parking or walk 1/2 hour to the cruise terminal from the free parking lot. Which do you think we chose?
This is where a tree avalanche has occurred. Because the soil is so thin the trees will eventually lose their hold and give way when they reach a certain size. They will fall down the slope and take the vegetation that is in their path down with it.
