We had a good sleep and a good visit over breakfast. We went down to Queen's Park which is a beautiful 80 acre park in the centre of Invercargill. We saw the rose garden, Chinese garden, aviary, winter garden and more. We've been so lucky with the weather since we got here, we've had no rain, temperatures between 16 and 23 degrees, mostly sunny with only a bit of overcast.
We went back to the farm for lunch, then Astrid drove us down to Bluff, one of the most southerly points of the South Island. It began as a whaling station - now it is where you catch the ferry to Stewart Island, New Zealand's third island.
We walked along the shore trail a bit, then drove to Bluff Hill and walked up in the increasing wind to enjoy the view from the top.
The smokestack on the left of the above photo is at the aluminium smelter. The long dark patch extending to the right is a recently burned area. If you zoom in you can see the smoke from flare-ups on the right.
Murray and Astrid's kids - Jacqui, Hannah, her twin Cameron and his partner Dawn (a Highland dancer!) - joined us for tea. We answered many questions about Canada, and learned much about New Zealand. We may have Kiwi visitors coming to stay with us in the future! We hope we can show them as good a time as they showed us.
