Today we left Punakaiki and drove through the west coast jungle with views of the Tasman Sea. It started out gray and overcast with patchy fog, but the sun soon came out.
We stopped for a break at Cape Foulwind, which wasn't actually all that windy.
We saw Wall Island, which is one of the most important seabird colonies on the west coast, and seal moms and pups on the rocks below us.

We made a quick stop in Westport.
We then headed south to Reefton for lunch, then east to Hanmer Springs, our stop for the night. It is a spa town with hot springs - the streets are named for spa towns in England - Cheltenham, Bath, etc. We drove out to the Heritage Forest and walked a loop with chainsaw carvings scattered along the way.
